Clinical depression goes by many names

By John M. Grohol, Psy.D.

Clinical depression goes by many names - depression, "blues," biological depression, severe depression. But that all refer to the same thing: feeling sad and depressed for a few weeks or months (not just a passing blue mood). This feeling is most often accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy (or feeling "overwhelmed"), and take little or no pleasure in the things that give you joy in the past. Someone who is depressed that simply "can not move" and feel really motivated to do anything. Even simple things - such as getting dressed in the morning or eating - a major obstacle in everyday life.

We've compiled a library of resources for you to explore depression. We encourage you to take your time with these resources, print things that want to read more carefully, and bring whatever you have additional questions about your family doctor or mental health professional.

Depression is treated today with modern antidepressant drugs and short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy. Do not be put off by some of the things written about depression - because it is so common, much has been written about it! Read what you need, and leave the rest for another day.
